Consistent Nest Site Selection by Turtles across Habitats with Varying Levels of Human Disturbance

چکیده
Human disturbance impacts the breeding behavior of many species, and it is particularly important to understand how these human-caused changes affect vulnerable taxa, such as turtles. Habitat alteration can change amount quality suitable nesting habitat, while human presence during may influence behavior. Consequently, both habitat microhabitat that females choose for nesting. In summer 2019, we located emydid turtle nests in east-central Alabama, USA, areas with varying levels (high, intermediate, low). We aimed determine whether turtles selected nest sites based on a range variables comparing maternally natural randomly chosen artificial nests. also compared site choice across different disturbance. Natural had less variance canopy openness average daily mean minimum temperature than nests, but were similar differing Additionally, experimentally quantified predation human-disturbed gradient. Nest rates higher low intermediate high Overall, results show are not adjusting their choices when faced anthropogenic change, suggesting preserving certain features will be critical populations areas.

Relation of Temperature, Moisture, Salinity, and Slope to Nest Site Selection in Loggerhead Sea Turtles
Nest site selection in reptiles can affect the fitness of the parents through the survival of their offspring because environmental factors influence embryo survivorship, hatchling quality, and sex ratio. In sea turtles, nest site selection is influenced by selective forces that drive nest placement inland and those that drive nest placement seaward. Nests deposited close to the ocean have a gr...
متن کاملNest-site selection in individual loggerhead turtles and consequences for doomed-egg relocation.
Relocation of eggs is a common strategy for conservation of declining reptilian populations around the world. If individuals exhibit consistency in their nest-site selection and if nest-site selection is a heritable trait, relocating eggs deposited in vulnerable locations may impose artificial selection that would maintain traits favoring unsuccessful nest-site selection. Conversely, if most in...
متن کاملNest-site selection and productivity of Vesper Sparrows breeding in grazed habitats
Livestock grazing in the shortgrass steppe of the Intermountain region of British Columbia may have a negative impact on ground-nesting birds, but evidence of such an impact is lacking. We examined nestsite selection and productivity of ground-nesting Vesper Sparrows (Pooecetes gramineus) across sites with different grazing histories. From 2006 to 2008, we monitored Vesper Sparrow nests and mea...
متن کاملNest site selection by Holarctic waterfowl: a multi-level review
Because of birds’ mobility, behaviour and many species’ migratory nature, they select repeatedly and spatially among habitats and have been central figures in studies of avian breeding habitat selection during the 20th and 21st centuries. The scientific literature on habitat use by breeding waterfowl has origins dating back to the writings of Charles Darwin in The Voyage of the Beagle, wherein ...
